Meet Dr. Peter Joy
Welcome. It's good to meet you.
I am a Registered Psychologist who has worked in British Columbia for more than 30 years. My
career began at the Thorson Pain Rehabilitation Clinic (1991-1992), followed by seven years at WorkSafeBC where I conducted psychological-legal assessments for medical, claims, rehabilitation, pension, and Board of Review purposes. I also participated in research and worked within WorkSafeBC's interdisciplinary pain program.
Since 1999, I have maintained a full-time private practice specializing in psychological
assessment and treatment. Over the years, I have worked with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, chronic pain, sleep difficulties, substance use concerns, cognitive issues, workplace stress and disability, relationship difficulties, grief and loss, and a wide range of other life challenges. I also routinely work with individuals who have been injured in motor vehicle accidents (as with ICBC), those experiencing work-related disability, RCMP members, first responders, and others affected by traumatic exposure in the workplace. Added, I greatly enjoy working with couples who are addressing relationship difficulties.
My approach is informed by a biopsychosocial understanding of physical and psychological health. It is highly collaborative and is tailored to each individual's needs, strengths, and goals. Treatment approaches include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and evidence-based approaches to couples and family therapy.
I have been a long-standing member of the British Columbia Psychological Association, the Canadian Psychological Association, the Canadian Pain Society, the American Pain Society, and the International Association for the Study of Pain.
More recently, I have acted as the psychological representative on the PainBC Project ECHO for Chronic Pain. I have worked as a psychological consultant with the Canadian Pain Regenerative Institute (CPRI Health) and Restore Sports Medicine.
Throughout my career, I have presented and published widely in my areas of interest and expertise.
I have been qualified on numerous occasions over the course of 33 years as an expert in psychology before the Supreme Court of British Columbia and the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta.
